Paula Rego Casa das Historias

The Paula Rego Casa das Historias opened in 2009.  This art gallery is dedicated to the work of world famous Portuguese artist Paula Rego.  Admirers of Rego’s work can view her paintings, engravings and art on textile in this large area. Each of her paintings tells a story.

Paula Rego studied at the Slade School of Art in London from 1952 to 1956.  She moved from Portugal to the UK permanently in 1976.

Paula Rego died in June 2022 in London but left her legacy to Cascais.

Eduardo Souto de Moura designed the Casa das Historias.  Apart from the gallery there is a shop to the left which sells Rego’s books and other gift items. A cafe overlooks the landscaped gardens.

Entitled: Paula Rego: Exemplary Girls and The Exhiled: from Creation to Conservation 

Fifteen years since it’s innauguration this gallery forms an important part of the cultural scene in Cascais, dedicated to Paula Rego’s art.  Apart from the Museum’s own collection some public and private collectors have loaned their works for exhibitions here. The Cascais Council has also acquired some artworks in the past years.

Paula Rego’s paintings were influenced by years of the social and political turmoil in Portugal including the dictatorship.  The paintings show the constant evolvement with new techiniques and colours in her unique creative process.  You can see framed prints,  etchings and aquatints.

The current exhibitions are Paula Rego: Exemplary Girls and the other entitled The Exiled: from Creation to Conservation.  An interesting group of drawings are from Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre, depicting the main character Mr Rochester on a horse.
