The borough of Cascais has several windmills in various areas. In Alcabideche, just before the Cascaishopping Centre, is the Ibn Mucana windmill.
This was named after the Arab poet who was born and raised in Alcabideche in the 11th century. The windmills were referred to in his poems and writings. Windmills were a necessary equipment as much of the population lived from agriculture and supplied the markets of Lisbon and surrounding areas.
