Lisboa has some great miradouros (lookout spots) scattered in various locations. These have spectacular views over the river and city.
The Miradouro de Santa Catarina is just before Principe Real. It overlooks St Jorge’s castle and the river. There is a kiosk which sells drinks and snacks.
The Rua Augusta Arch (Arco da Rua Augusta) faces the Terreiro do Paço – Praça do Comércio. There is a lift and staircase that takes you to the top and from here you have a 360º spectacular view of Lisboa. Building of the current Arch began in 1873 and was completed in 1875. The sculptures on the top are by Célestin Anatole Calmels depicting glory. The sculptures on the level below by Vitor Bastos refer to Viriato, Vasco da Gama and the Marquês de Pombal.
Other miradouros are at Santa Luzia (Portas do Sol) and Nossa Senhora do Monte. There is also the Parque Eduardo VII which has good views and in the summer holds the book fair – the Feira do Livro.
The Vasco da Gama Tower Babylon 360º Bar, above, in the Parque das Nações offers fabulous 360º views over that area of Lisboa. A lift takes you to the top at 145metres. Opened in May 2023.
