Bacalhau: salted codfish a Portuguese tradition

Bacalhau or salt cod fish is the national dish and you can find it served in various forms in restaurants. It is said that there are more than 365 recipes. It is served grilled, baked, cooked with potatoes or with cream. It is traditional fare at Christmas Eve supper.  Although an acquired taste it is certainly worth trying. Below are two favourites.

Bacalhau com natas is the codfish cooked with potatoes in a cream sauce and baked in the oven with a tasty crust.

Pataniscas de bacalhau are codfish fritters – using fresh coriander, and a batter of flour and eggs.
