  • JERONIMOS MONASTERY Praça do Império, Belém. Tel: 21 3620034 Open: 10am-6pm Closed: Mon. Bus: 27, 28, 29, 43, 49, 51. Tram: 15. Train: Belém. A fine example of Manueline architecture. Construction began in 1502 by order of King Manuel to commemorate the discovery of the sea route to India. The south wing, once the sleeping quarters of the monks, is the National Museum of Archaeology.

Train: Belém. A former generating station on the bank of the river built at the beginning of the century.
  • DESIGN MUSEUM (Museu do Design) Centro Cultural de Belém. Open: 11am-7.15pm. More than 500 pieces of furniture and other works ranging from decorative art, modernism, and pop art.
  • PALÁCIO NACIONAL DA AJUDA Largo da Ajuda Tel: 21 3637095 Open: 10am-4.30pm. Closed: Wed. Bus: 14, 32, 42, 60. Tram: 18. Train: Belém. Work on this palace began in 1802 and only completed many years later. A former residence of several royals. Rooms with paintings, furniture and sculptures.

  • MILITARY MUSEUM (Museu Militar) Lgo. dos Caminhos de Ferro Tel: 21 8842569 Open: 10am-5pm. Closed: Mon/hols. Bus: 9, 25, 28, 35, 39, 46. Exhibits of Portuguese military history, light arms, ancient artillery, paintings from the 18th to 20th centuries.
  • MUSEUM OF ANCIENT ART (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga) Rua das Janelas Verdes Tel: 21 3912800 Open: Wed-Sun: 10am-6pm and Tues: 2-6pm. Bus: 27, 40, 49, 51, 60. Tram: 15, 18. Displays Portuguese art (mainly paintings, ceramics and some furniture) from the 11th to 19th century. Items to look for include the panels of São Vicente de Fora and Temptation of St Anthony by Hieronymous Bosch.
  • CARMO CONVENT (Ruinas do Convento do Carmo) Rua do Camo. Open 10am-6pm. Closed Mon. Bus: 58, 103. Tram: 28. Metro: Baixa/Chiado. Archaelogical artifacts lying in the ruins of a former convent.
  • BASÍLICA DA ESTRELA / JARDIM DA ESTRELA Rua da Estrela. Tel: 21 3960915. Open: 8am-1pm and 3-8pm. Bus: 20, 22, 38. Tram: 25, 28. A Baroque Roman architecture 18th century church. Built by order of Queen Maria I, in 1776, to fulfill a promise on the birth of a son, Prince José. Completed in 1789. Opposite the Basilica is the Estrela Garden.
  • WATER MUSEUM (Aqueduto das Águas Livres) Calçada da Quintinha. Tel: 21 8135522. Open: 10am-6pm. Closed Sun/holidays. Construction began in 1732. In 1748 water from neighbouring areas was pumped into Lisbon and distributed to various outlets and fountains. An impressive piece of engineering.
  • MUSEUM AND BOTANICAL GARDEN (Museu e Jardim Botânico) Rua da Escola Politécnica, 58, Príncipe Real Tel: 21 3921800 Open. 9am-6pm. Approximately 4 hectares with 15,000 species, including gymnosperms. One of the richest in Europe for palm trees.
  • PARQUE EDUARDO VII Off the Marqu^ês de Pombal. Bus: 1, 2, 12, 20, 22, 31, 38, 41, 46, 49. Metro: M Pombal, S. Sebastião Parque. The park was renamed in 1903 by the then mayor Rosa Araújo with the visit of King Edward VII to Lisbon. It is the venue for the annual Lisbon book fair.

  • PRAÇA MARQUÊS DE POMBAL Metro: Marquês de Pombal. One of Lisbon's main avenues the Av. da Liberdade leads to this roundabout with the statue of the Marquês de Pombal which was unveiled in 1934.
  • SÃO ROQUE CHURCH Largo Trindade Coelho. Tel: 213235381. Open: 10am-5pm.Bus: 58, 100. Metro: Baixa/Chiado. 16th and 17th Century sacred art.
  • CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN MUSEUM (Museu Calouste Gulbenkian) Av. de Berna, 45 Tel: 21 7823000 Open: 10am-6pm Tues: 2-6pm. Closed: Mon/Holidays. Bus: 16, 26, 31, 46, 56. Metro: S. Sebastião. The collection of the oil billionaire, who died in Lisbon in 1955 includes Egyptian, Islamic, Greco-Roman, Oriental works of art, books, coins, textiles, etc. Also a fabulous collection of works by French jeweller René Lalique.
  • PUPPET MUSEUM (Museu das Marionetas) Lg. Rodrigues de Freitas, 19A Tel: 21 8865794 Open: 10am-7pm. Several hundred puppets on display.
  • MUSEUM/CENTRE OF MODERN ART (Museu do Centro de Arte Moderna) Rua Dr. Nicolau Bettencourt (in the Gulbenkian Gardens) - Tel: 21 7823000 Open: 10am-6pm Tues: 2-6pm. Closed: Mon/Holidays. Bus: 16, 26, 31, 45, 56. Metro: S. Sebastião. Impressive collection of Portuguese and foreign modern paintings, sculpture, design and prints.
  • SANTA JUSTA LIFT (Elevador de Santa Justa) This elevator takes you from the Rua do Ouro to the Bairro Alto area. It was innaugurated in 1901, designed by the French architect Louis Reynard and built by the engineer Roaul Mesnier de Ponsard.

  • SÉ CATEDRAL Largo da Sé Tel: 21 8866752. Open: 9am-5pm. Bus: 37. Tram: 12, 28. Built at the end of the 12th century of Roman-gothic style by order of King Afonso Henriques after reconquering Lisbon from the Moors. It underwent various changes being rebuilt after the earthquakes of 1344 and 1755.
  • ST ANTHONY MUSEUM (Museu Antoniano) Lgo Stº António da Sé Tel: 21 8860447 Open: 10am-1pm and 2-6pm. Closed: Mon/Hols. Bus: 37. Tram: 12, 28. Works from the 17th century on the life of St Anthony, patron saint of Lisbon. Church next door.
  • NATIONAL PANTHEON (Panteão Nacional) Campo de Santa Clara, Alfama Tel: 21 8881529 Open: 10am-5pm Closed: Mon. Bus: 12. Tram: 28. Baroque 17th century church with the tombs of Portugal's presidents, the Dukes of Bragança, writers and other illustrious nationals.
  • CASA DOS BICOS Rua dos Bacalhoeiros. A 16th century building. The outside façade is built with unusual stones of diamond shape.
  • CASA-MUSEU FERNANDO PESSOA Rua Coelho da Rocha, 16/18 Tel: 21 3968190 Open: Mon/Tues/Wed/Fri: 10am-6pm; Thurs: 1pm-8pm. Closed Sat/holidays. Belongings and works of the famous poet and writer.

  • ST JORGE'S CASTLE (Castelo de S. Jorge) Tel: 21 8877244 Open: 9am-9pm. Bus: 37. Tram: 12, 28. Built on one of Lisbon's seven hills to defend the city from enemies. It was occupied by Romans, Visigoths and Moors. Spectacular views of the city and River Tagus.
  • JOÃO DE DEUS MUSEUM (Museu João de Deus) Av Alvares Cabral, 69, Estrela Tel: 21 3960854 Open: 10am-noon and 2-5pm Closed: Sat/Sun/holidays. Portuguese paintings and sculpture, furniture, books, medals including belongings of the poet João de Deus.
  • MUSEUM OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS (Museu dos Instrumentos Musicais) Instituto da Biblioteca Nacional, 2nd Floor, Campo Grande Open: 10am-1pm, 2-5pm; Closed Sat/Sun. A large collection of mainly European musical instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries. Special emphasis on Portuguese instruments.
  • NATIONAL TILE MUSEUM (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) Rua Madre de Deus, 4 Tel: 21 8147747 Open: Wed-Sun: 10am-6pm; Tues: 2-6pm Closed Mon. Traces the development of Portuguese tile making from its Moorish roots to the present day. A former convent built by Queen Leonor. Different types of tile panels. Also a church and chapel adjoining.
  • NATIONAL COSTUME MUSEUM (Museu Nacional do Traje) Largo Júlio Castilho, 2, Lumiar Tel: 21 7590318 Open: 10am-6pm. Closed: Mon. Bus: 1, 3, 4, 7, 36, 101, 107, 108. Metro: Campo Grande, Colégio Militar. Located beside the National Theatre Museum. One of the best organized and more interesting exhibitions in the city, if you're interested in mainly 19th/20th century clothing.
  • MARQUES DE FRONTEIRA PALACE. Largo S. Domingos de Benfica, 1. Tel: 21 7782023. Visits at: 10.30am, 11am and noon. Closed Sun/holidays. Beautiful tile works can be seen here.
  • MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS (Museu das Artes Decorativas) Lg. Portas do Sol, 2 Tel: 21 8881991. Open: 10am-5pm Closed Mon. Houses one of the most extensive collections of Portuguese furniture in the country, as well as porcelain, glass and Portuguese silverwork.
  • TRAM MUSEUM (Museu de Carris) Rua 1º de Maio, 103. Tel: 213613087. Open: Mon-Sat: 10am-5pm. Closed Sun/hols. Depicts the history of the colourful Lisbon tram.
  • LISBON ZOO Estrada de Benfica, 158-160. Tel: 21 7232900. Open: 10am-8pm. Metro: Jardim Zoologico. Also an aquarium and dolphins performing.
