PORTUGAL is situated at the most westerly point of Europe, on the Atlantic ocean, next to Spain. It is an independent country with its own language and culture and should not be confused as part of Spain! It was proclaimed a monarchy in 1140 when Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king, conquered it from the Moors. It was ruled by kings and queens until October 1910 when the monarchy was overthrown and it became a Republic.
It had several presidents and was led for many years by Dr António Oliveira Salazar as its prime minister. In April 1974 a bloodless coup took place which led the country into chaos. Since then it has developed a stable democracy.
It joined the European Union in 1986 and in January 2002 was one of the fifteen European countries to adopt the Euro as its currency replacing the Portuguese escudo.
Although bureaucracy rules the country, especially in business dealings, the lifestyle is very relaxed and easy-going. Perhaps frustrating to anyone who would like to start a business when dealing with paperwork required by instituitions, government entities and banks. In some sectors such as the mobile telephone market it is quite modern and in line with other developed nations - in other areas it falls back to a third world category.
Progress in the last five to ten years has hit the country in the form of fast roads, a better public transport system, bridges and modern buildings in the capital and main towns. There are however still backward villages and rural areas where life goes on at a slower pace lending these areas a charm all its own with unspoilt countryside.
The people are friendly and welcoming and the country has much potential to move forward. |
